About Pilates

The Pilates method of exercise & conditioning was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's.

It is a movement system which uses spring weighted apparatus and a mat repertory to condition the body and rehabilitate injuries.

The exercises focus on strengthening the core muscles of the body while improving posture and spinal alignment.

Its focus is on strengthening the "powerhouse" (abs, back, inner and outer thighs and buttocks) to execute the exercises which are designed to increase flexibility, strengthen muscles and improve posture. The method involves a series of controlled movements, concentration and the coordination of breath and movement, thereby helping to balance mind and body.

Pilates works because: you will learn how to efficiently engage the "powerhouse" muscles in your abdominal area, lower back, and buttocks to perform the exercises. The stretching and resistance movements of Pilates elongates your muscles so that you actually lose inches horizontally as the body readjusts itself, yet gain vertically as the spine re-adjusts.
